Mrs. Melissa Emond » Welcome to 5E! Happy September!

Welcome to 5E! Happy September!

Welcome Back!  We are ready for a fabulous year. Things are a little different this year, as you are now the role models for the school.  You have more responsibilities around the school, and the lower grades look up to you.  You still switch between four main teachers.  You have homeroom, math, spelling, reading, and theology with me.  You have science with Mrs. Hickey, English with Mrs. G, and social studies with Mrs. Joyce.  The four of us are working close together to help you all succeed!

In Theology the fifth grade will study the history of the church, sacraments, and parts of the Mass.  We will participate in a Mass a few times a month.  Eventually fifth graders from both rooms will be asked to be the readers at Mass.  We also have fifth grade altar servers.

The fifth grade begins the math year with place value, estimation, addition, and subtraction.   We will study place value from the hundred billions down to the thousandths.  We will perform math operations in both whole numbers and decimals. The fourth grade has similar topics as the fifth.  They will spend more time on place value, but they only learn up to the hundred millions.  We use www.ixl.com/signin/stchris as an additional class resource.  I expect the students to work on ixl for a minimum of 30 minutes a week, due every Friday.  The ixl sections for grade 5 are A, B, G, and H.  The section for grade 4 is A.  These sections change as we move to new math topics.

In reading, our text is a consumable.  It is My View.  There are weekly stories that we read together in class.  There is also an online version of the text, so we will also hear the stories read to us. Test are on Fridays.  Right now, we are reading different types of informational text.  We are finding it very informative!

In Spelling, students are given a list, and we will need at least a week and a half to complete the stories.  During the week, students will write the list three times, define 5 spelling words, and alphabetize the list. The fifth grade link to spellingcity is: https://www.spellingcity.com/users/[email protected]
This is a great place to practice weekly words.  Students can play games and take spelling tests.  The entire year of spelling is already in spellingcity.  Students can practice ahead of time to prepare for the announced tests.  We will write the test date in our planners and on the spelling list.  Lessons for September are:  1, 2, and 3.

We are off to a great start.  The students are happy to be back and are enthusiastic learners.  I am so happy to have them all in my class.  Thank you for sharing your children with us!
