Welcome to 2A September 2026

Hi my name is Mary Beth Allen. This is my 20th year at Saint Christopher Academy. I am married and my son, his wife and my three beautiful grandchildren all live in New Jersey. Besides teaching Second Grade, I am also a certified Orton Gillingham practitioner. OG teaches children to understand why words are spelled and pronounced the way they are rather than simply memorizing words.

September 2026

September is here, the school bells ring,

A brand-new year brings everything!

Second grade is a special place,

With learning, laughter and smiles on every face.

We'll read and write and

learn each day,

Make new friends along

the way.

With God beside us, we'll

grow and see,

What a wonderful year this will be!

Here are some of the things we will learn this month:

Religion: God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit

Math: Math Olympics, related addition facts, doubles +1, doubles -1, skip counting, adding three addends, counting back to subtract, related subtraction facts

Reading: The stories this month are realistic fiction, we will be reading stories multiple times to build on fluency, accuracy and comprehension. Fluent readers read at a good rate, not too slow and not too quickly. A fluent reader reads as if they are speaking. We will pick Gook Fit Books to read durirng F.R.E.D. Time (Free Reading Every Day) each day.

Phonics: We will focus on initial, medial and final sounds, open and closed syllables and short vowels

Writing: letter formation, and neatness will be stressed as we continue to build on our handwriting skills

English: nouns, subjects, sentences,and predicates of sentences

Social Studies: We will begin our year focusing on families, extended family members, ancestors, family tree, artifacts, primary and secondary sources

Science- Our class is learning about plants. We will focus on the parts of plants,what plants need to survive, how plants are grouped, plants without flowers, woodland plants, prairie plants and how plants are adapted to live near water.
