March News

Happy March!  It certainly has come in like a lion!  Hopefully we are in the lamb part of it now!  Here is what we'll be working on this month.

Math:  We began 3 digit multiplication.  We will continue to work with division and we will review fact families.  We'll then work with statistics and probability and we'll finish the month with measurement and time.  Please continue to work on multiplication facts with your child.

Reading:  We are working with biographies. We will be reading from Frederick Douglass by George Gregory and from Milton Hershey Chocolate King, Town Builder by Charnan Simon.  We are working with  Author's purpose, identifying main idea and key details. Distinguishing between fact and fiction and making sure we understand what we are reading by answering questions using supporting facts from the stories..

Writing/Grammar:  We are working with present and past participles.  We are using helping verbs and we are working with irregular verbs.  Later, we will work with simple present tense and simple past tense.  In writing, we are working on creating our own Narrative story.

Handwriting:  We have a few uppercase letters to go over and we will have finished practicing individual cursive letters.  We will then be writing in cursive on a regular basis.

Religion: This month we will be focusing on Jesus' crucifixion, the events that led up to it and why it is so important.  We are learning about Passover and why Jesus was celebrating with his disciples. We are reading the Bible and we'll be watching a couple simple videos to help us understand.

Science:  We are working on the Design Process.  We are in the process of answering this question, "How can we stop the balls from escaping the yard?"  Your children are working in groups to come up with ways to solve this problem.  They will be presenting their ideas to Mrs. Clarke.  If all goes well, we may be able to build a solution.  We will then move to the unit on plants and animals.
