February in 5J

Religion: We kicked off February with Catholic Schools Week. Celebrating Mass with Father David was a wonderful way to begin the month! For our service project, we are collecting items for the local food pantry and making Valentine cards for patients at Catholic Medical Center. We are wrapping up chapters 11 & 12 learning about the four parts of the Mass. As we dive into unit 3 we will learn more about the sacraments of healing.
Reading: In honor of Black History Month we began the month reading poetry from authors of color. Our stories this month will be a historical fiction "Keeping Mr. John Holton Alive" , a story about slavery in the early 1800's; and a biography titled "Delivering Justice" about the life of Westly Wallace Law during the time of segregation in Savannah, GA. We will work on the following skills: analyzing characters, discovering the relationship between ideas, and summarizing.

Writing: There has been a TON of writing going on in 5th grade! Students wrote persuasive pieces on why someone should come to Saint Christopher Academy. They wrote formal letters of thanks to religious people who serve in our diocese. Currently we are working on biographies of presidents and famous African Americans.
Social Studies 4th- Currently we are learning about the economy in fourth grade. Students have chosen partners and are writing their own business plans. We will also learn about famous African Americans in history and write a research paper.

Social Studies 5th- We are learning about life in colonial America, delving deeper into the 13 Colonies. We will learn about the beginning of slavery in the colonies and move onto the American Revolution. Students will also be researching the presidents and be writing a report and drawing a portrait of each to display in our "Hall of Presidents".
