September in 5J

We are having a fabulous start to the year here in the 5J Café! Students are working hard and adjusting to new routines and procedures.

4th Grade Social Studies- In Chapter 1 we're learning about the 5 regions in the United States. Students have had their first quiz and are moving along to climate and elevation in these areas. The project in this chapter is exciting! Students are working in groups to put together a commercial convincing people to come to their particular region: the West, Northeast, Midwest, etc. We also honored the brave people who lost their lives on 9/11 and celebrated Constitution Day with a little Preamble picture parade.

5th Grade Social Studies- In chapter 1 we are learning about the Early Americans and Native American tribes. Students have also had their first quiz and are moving along to food and culture. This lends itself to information needed for their project. Groups are working on gathering information on the foods that different Native American tribes ate. They will put together recipes and we'll celebrate the end of the chapter with a Fun Food Friday! Yum!
The 5th graders are also participating in the NH Kid Governor Program this year. Students may choose to run in the upcoming election, but they will all participate in the voting process all while learning about local and State government.

Religion- We have already completed two chapter learning about how Jesus was sent to teach us about God's love and save us from sin. Jesus wants us to continue his mission. We have been blessed to celebrate Mass with our school community. This year our 5th grade friends have the opportunity to read at Mass and some are even altar servers. Our service project for this month is writing holiday cards for our military. <3

Reading- Our first two stories have been informational texts: The Path to Paper Son and Life on Earth and Beyond. We're learning about suffixes and Greek roots. Our class read, Stone Fox, which is also our first book report is due by the end of the month.
