March 2024

    leprechaun, green, shamrock
Spring is almost here and we continue to bloom and blossom in 3L. After a (hopefully) restful February Break, we return with new confidence as we enter into the Lenten season. It's hard to believe that we only have a few months left to the school year, but in true 3L style, we will greet them with smiles on our faces, our angel wings on our backs and our God-lights shining.
In Religion, we have several projects we are working on. To start our Mondays, we recite the Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary. We have also now fully entered into the solemn season of Lent, and we are discussing the importance of ashes, abstinence and fasting. We also are doing daily refections on the lives of the Saints, especially those who can help us more fully understand our Lenten journey. This practice keeps ourselves aware of what we do to others and how we can seek forgiveness for our sins. Stations of the Cross is also a  weekly part of our Lenten experience, and there will be a Penance Service on March 7 for all that are ready and able to participate in the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
For Math, we are ending our chapter on statistics and probability as we learn more about  exploring mean, median and mode, making combinations,  and determining outcome. To cap off the unit, we will be creating our own charts and graphs as we count and color Skittles, presenting our data findings to the class. Chapter 8 will bring us into Measuring, using both standard measurement and the metric system. This is a fun unit, as we will be using hands on activities to determine capacity, tell time and measure objects around the classroom. A favorite for all!
Reading brings us a unit on heroes, as we will read selected biographies and learn all about Mama Miti  (Wangari Maathai and the Trees of Kenya), Jane Addams and her role as a social justice advocate in The House that Jane Built as well as poems about real life heroes, and what makes them so special in our world. We will also be presenting our pop bottle book reports on a biography of our choice, telling the class what makes this person outstanding in history.
And lastly, in Social Studies, we are continuing our chapter on America's First Peoples and the early explorers from Spain, France and England. We are also learning how to read a timeline and how to use coordinates and  a compass rose to help us locate places on a map.
The month will close as we enter into the most solemn of all weeks in the Catholic Church, Holy Week (March 24-March 29). As a way to pause and reflect on Jesus' Journey to the Cross, school will not be in session from Holy Thursday (March 28) through Easter Monday (April 1) and resume again on Tuesday, April 2. This is a season of questions for all learners of the Catholic faith, as we dive more deeply into the how's and why's of the Resurrection.
As I do every month, I want to thank you for the joy your children bring to me each day. It is so nice to see their smiling faces and grab hold of their enthusiasm as they live, love and learn together. God bless you for a beautiful, bountiful Spring.
