December

December is a special time at Saint Christopher's. We had a lot of opportunities to gather together as a community.

We attended special events like the tree lighting and the schoolwide reading of the Polar Express.  Kindergarteners also performed in the Christmas concert.

While in the classroom kindergarteners learned:

Religion - We learned about  the Sacrament of Baptism. We had a special visitor, Father Joseph from Peterborough. We asked him questions about being a priest and discussed different  parts of the Liturgical Year. In class, we talked about Advent, said a prayer, and lit our classroom Advent wreath. We talked about Mary and Joseph’s journey to Bethlehem and the birth of Jesus. We made birthday cards for Jesus. We read The Christmas Story of the Holy Family. We went in to see the new church! We practiced genuflecting, and found Mary, Joseph, and Jesus in the church.

ELA- We covered letters Q, U, A, M, P, S , T and N. Our sight words this month are you, of, come, some, like, play, he, had . We practiced blending and segmenting CVC words (constant, vowel, constant). We worked in small groups that focused on areas some students need extra practice with such as rhyming and beginning letter sounds. We discussed how to make a word plural. I met with students to check in on their progress and reading level. Students read with me and received a “just right book” to keep in their desks.

Math- We introduced math centers. During centers we created patterns, worked with pattern blocks, practiced writing numbers, and one to one counting. We learned about equal to and less then.

Students practiced counting, using a ten frame, and comparing numbers. We continue to practice counting by 10’s, 2’s, 1’s.
