February News 4H

WOW! I can't believe it's already February! They say time flies when you are having FUN!

We are experiencing one of the kids' favorite months.  It's Catholic Schools Week!!  We dressed in our favorite school spirit clothes and wrote why we love our fabulous school.  On Monday, we had Mass with Father David and sat with our buddies. We also got to write and send letters of appreciation to many religious leaders throughout our dioceses. On Wednesday, we got to compete in color wars. It might be a new favorite activity. 4th Grade was Team Yellow!! Mismatch day was Thursday and the students & staff went all out, it was FUN! The kids got a frozen treat, too!  The absolute favorite day of the week is Friday, PJ DAY! We will end the day with a movie too!

Religion: We are continuing our studies on the 10 commandments. We will take a closer look this month at the 4th through 6th Commandments. They remind us to honor and love our parents and guardians by respecting them. We also made Valentine's cards to send to CMC hospital to lift the spirits of patients there.

Reading: Informational Texts are our focus this month. We are learning more vocabulary, Latin roots, context clues, and summarizing. Improving our fluency and better comprehension are the goals this month. Each week we are incorporating more writing into our lessons, with writing prompts or responding to questions in short answers is very helpful for all students as they continue to grow & learn.

Science (4th Grade): We wrapped up our animals unit with learning about inherited traits versus learned traits. We began working on our very first animal research projects. Each student has selected an animal to research and make a tri-fold presentation out of. We can't wait to see our museum of animals come to life as we bring all our learning together to apply it in this cool research project.

Science (5th Grade):Food Chains! All food chains and webs start with a producer, who is able to make their own food. Consumer, decomposer, prey and predator are a few of our new vocabulary words that we will learn. All 5th graders will choose an ecosystem then be charged with the task to create an animal to live in this ecosystem. It will be very exciting to see how they mix and match different adaptations of animals to create something original that can survive in on our ecosystems.
