October News

Wow!  The past month has really gone by fast.  The students are working hard learning the organizational and time management skills necessary to be successful in grade five.  They are quickly learning their schedule and the class expectations of four core teachers.

In Theology, we are studying the sacraments.  A big focus of every chapter is how Jesus served others, and this was able to be incorporated into our first service project. Everyone is decorating and writing a card for the "Holiday Cards for Our Military Challenge."  The students are taking this very seriously.  Their care and creativity i s awesome to witness.  They are even helping their buddy classes with this service project. In class, we are also studying the rosary and the mysteries.  We will illustrate each mystery as a class.

In Spelling, use https://www.spellingcity.com/users/[email protected] for your weekly words. Lessons take us a week and a half to complete.  This month we will complete Lessons 4 and 5.

In Reading, our class text begins the year with nonfiction writing.  We are concentrating on how to closely read documents and how to write a basic paper.  Each student will write papers under this format:  Introduction, Body, and Conclusion.  We start with shorter paragraphs consisting of 3 to 4 sentences and work our way up to 5 to 7 sentences per paragraph.  We have started our first book report.  We are all read Stone Fox.  Students were given a copy of the book for the month of September. Students will complete their entire book report in class.  The next book report's genre is a choice of Mystery or Science Fiction.

In Math, the students are mastering the basics.  They have been adding, subtracting, and multiplying their way through whole numbers and decimals.   We are keeping busy, but there is always time for extra help.  The extra help session for grade five is on Mondays at 8 AM.  D, CC, and DD are the assigned ixl sections for grade 5.  Grade 4 has sections D and E.  One half hour of ixl is due every Friday. 4th grade extra help is on Fridays at 8 AM.
