Mrs. Melissa Emond » Happy New Year!

Happy New Year!

Wow!  Has it been busy in our wing!? Thank you so much for the wonderful Christmas wishes and gifts.  Your generosity and kindness were appreciated.

The fifth grade had a lot of fun learning about the Jesse Tree.  Their trees came out beautifully.   It was great to keep the tradition at Saint Chris.  In Theology, the New Year brings more detailed study on the sacraments.

In Spelling, lessons 10, 11, and 12 will be our focus.  Every morning a new spelling activity is assigned.  Tests run every week and a half.  Spelling lists can be found at https://www.spellingcity.com/users/[email protected].

In Reading, we are reading Realistic Fiction for our weekly class stories.  The close reads have focused on syllables, problems and solutions, and main ideas.  Our monthly book report is The One and Only Ivan. The book is read at home or during our silent read.  The book needs to be read by January 26th.  We will complete the book report project in class.

In Math, the 4th grade has started long division with double digit divisors.  Their division skills are impressive, but we still need to work on faster recall of the basic facts.  IXL sections are J and K in grade 4 and E in grade 5. Extra help is every Friday at 8 AM.  No extra help Friday the 12th, come Monday the 8th.

The 5th grade has been studying fractions in Math for the month.  They began with simplest form, greatest common factors, and least common denominators, and graduated to adding and subtraction. The sections of ixl are F, J, and K.  Extra help is every Monday at 8 AM.

Accelerated Math is every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. The accelerated kids are working in depth on order of operations.  They are using fractions, decimals, and exponents in multistep problems.  We are close to finishing book 1 and will prepare for the midterm.
